Pilot Trial Completed!

362 Participants Enrolled

The pilot study aimed to assess the feasibility of conducting a cluster randomised controlled trial comparing Advanced Trauma Life Support® (ATLS®) and Primary Trauma Care (PTC) with standard care. Seven hospitals across India participated and the trial included adult patients who presented with history of trauma. The study included both participant and feasibility outcomes. The primary participant outcome was all-cause mortality within 30 days from the time of arrival to the emergency department. We are currently writing up the results of this pilot, so stay tuned!

About

Trauma is a Threat to Global Health

The reduction of mortality and morbidity from trauma is part of the Sustainable Development Goals. The trauma life support training programs Advanced Trauma Life Support® (ATLS®) and Primary Trauma Care (PTC) are widely used to improve hospital trauma care but no high quality evidence exists to show that these programs improve patient outcomes.

A Network of Researchers

The purpose of the Trauma life support training Effectiveness Research Network (TERN) is to develop a research project to assess the effects of ATLS and PTC training on patient outcomes compared to standard care.

The specific aims of the network are to:

  1. Assess the feasibility of conducting a cluster randomised controlled trial (CRCT) on the effect of ATLS and PTC training on patient outcomes compared to standard care
  2. Conduct community consultations to elicit community members' views on the acceptability and relevance of the planned research, and to invlive communities in the choice of outcome measures
  3. Conduct a pilot study of ATLS and PTC training compared to standard care
  4. Develop joint research applications and promote capacity building by framing topics for PhD projects based on the outcomes of the pilot study

Funding

Our network and the pilot trial is funded by the Swedish Research Council and the Laerdal Foundation
